Additional members of the sulfur-containing Allium family include onions and shallots, which possess the same anticancer compounds as garlic. In addition to this, it is notable to point out that onions are a major source of a unique compound known as quercetin. Quercetin is a flavonoid believed to prevent growth of cancer cells and interfere with the development of cancer. Similar to garlic, onions and shallots seem to be most helpful in cancers of the digestive tract (e.g. esophagus, stomach, and colon).
