Fermented wheat germ extract, a concentrated extract of wheat germ fermented by baker’s yeast, was developed by Mate Hidvegi, a Hungarian biochemist, in the 1990s and is used mainly for its ability to stimulate and modulate the functions of the immune system. It is used by cancer patients to augment their conventional
cancer therapy or to improve cancer or therapy related symptoms and improve quality of life. Fermented wheat germ extract is approved as a medicinal food for cancer patients in Hungary and is used similarly in other nations of the European Union, parts of the Middle East, and Asia. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has given this extract a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status and this extract is used as a dietary supplement.
